Update fields from within a note

Who can use this feature?

Field commands within notes allow you to update a field value for any account, contact, opportunity, or other object—without leaving the note. Going forward, the previous and new values are reflected in the note body.

Add field commands to a note

You can add field commands to a note draft or a published note. Note drafts require you to select an associated object prior to using field commands.

  1. Open a published note or create a new draft. If starting from a draft, ensure there is an object (account, contact, opportunity, and/or additional) related to the note.
  2. Within your note body, click + > Field in the toolbar (or type /field [press Enter] in the note body).
  3. Keep typing the name of the field, or browse the object to see all fields.
If a field is a locked Salesforce field, you can call up the field in your note, but you will not be able to edit the field value. These fields show a lock icon.
  4. Set the field to the new value you want, and press ✓ to confirm. The field updates immediately.
slash_fields__1_.gifIf changed, the note displays the field name along with the previous and new values: Green text for additions and red strikethrough text for deletions. If a field value has not changed, the note displays just the value.

Add field commands to a note template

When creating a note template, you cannot choose a selected object (account, contact, opportunity, etc.); therefore, you can add field commands as placeholders but cannot set values for fields in templates.

  1. From the list of notes template, click ... > Edit next to the template you want to edit.
  2. Within your note body, click + > Field in the toolbar (or type /field [press Enter] in the note body).
  3. Keep typing the name of the field, or browse the object to see all fields.
  4. Press enter to continue adding fields to the template (if needed). The template auto-saves as you go.
  5. When finished, close the template. The field(s) will now be listed in the note body the next time you use the template to start a new note draft.
